In addition to the two new Yak models coming, the existing Yaks were updated for the next release. Greebo also made the skins. This Yak-9U was one of four Yak-9Us donated to the VVS by the Vahtangov theater in Moscow. It served with the 29th GvIAP who were based on the Finnish front in the winter of 1944/45.
This Yak-9T flew with the 3rd Fighter Aviation Corps (3 IAK). This unit had 200 fighters in six squadrons and was controlled directly from the Soviet High Command, rather than any specific Army Corps. It was sent to wherever on the front line the High Command wanted to achieve local air superiority. 3 IAK began operations in April 1943 and served until the end of the war. This early production Yak-9T was forced down behind enemy lines in late 43 or early 44, captured intact and extensively examined by the Luftwaffe in Berlin.
